Broadening INSME contacts worldwide

We are also pleased that contacts with organisations from all over the world have been increasing in the last months. The INSME Secretariat has recently met, at its headquarters in Rome, a delegation of representatives of Chilean incubators and universities. Additional opportunities may arise from the follow up of meetings with the UNCTAD/WTO International Trade Centre in Geneva and the Working Group on SMEs of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) in Istanbul this month.

We are confident that in September we will make good use of these and other contacts, when we will get back to you after the Summer break full of energy and new ideas.

Enjoy your reading and keep in touch!

When an entrepreneur or a would-be-entrepreneur wants to turn a new idea or technology into a business, he needs finance. But what are the right tools to finance innovative business ideas? INSME in its interviews has several times tackled this issue from different perspectives. In this interview with Mr. Christian Saublens, the perspective is that of the Director of the European Association of Development Agencies (EURADA) who puts forward an interesting concept: the "financial supply chain".

What's New on Innovation
Italian Chairmanship for the EUREKA Initiative

From July 1 2006 till 30 June 2007 , Italy has taken over the chairmanship of EUREKA, the Europe-wide Network for Market-Oriented R&D and Innovation.

EUREKA's role under the Italian chairmanship will be to redouble its focus on innovation, which should bring results in the first six months, since the new Finnish Presidency of the EU will also have a strong innovation agenda (read article below).

The Italian chairmanship also brings with it a major new initiative - EUROSTARS, as well as closer cooperation between EUREKA Clusters on the one hand and European Technology Platforms (ETPs) and Joint Technology Initiatives (JTIs) on the other.

For further information, visit  EUREKA website:
 http://www.eureka.be

A dedicated website of the Italian Chairmanship is available at:

New directions for the EU innovation policy

Tackling the innovation gap will be on the top of the agenda of Finland's work programme during its 2006 EU Presidency which started on July 1. The goal is to shift the current EU innovation policy towards more demand-led innovation initiatives.

Research-friendly regulation; business-friendly research; innovation-oriented public services; assisting entrepreneurs in bringing innovations to the market is in brief the Finnish contribution to the EU innovation policy set by the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) 2007-2013 which was adopted by the European Parliament on 1 June.

Innovation offshoring forces the US to respond with a new strategy of competitiveness, development and innovation. This report - edited by the East-West Center and the United States Asia Pacific Council (USAPC) - recommends what such a strategy should include.
