   Meeting with CORFO, Chile
The INSME Secretariat recently met with CORFO (Chilean Economic Development Agency) to learn more about the Chilean European Business Network Platform, a new project aimed to increase the business cooperation between Europe and Chile, especially with regard to the transfer of technology and know-how. The meeting took place on 15 October at the Chilean Embassy in Rome and represented a good opportunity to discuss possible collaboration activities between Chilean and European enterprises and intermediary organisations. The Chilean European Business Network Platform will be launched by mid-November.

News from the INSME Members
   EBN collaborates with the Europe INNOVA project "IMP�rove"

The European BIC Network EBN assists the Europe INNOVA project IMP�rove in finding the most suitable service provider for Innovation Management related projects.


IMP�rove (IMProvement of Innovation Management Performance with Sustainable IMPact) helps innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), innovation intermediaries and policy makers in successfully managing their innovation processes so to secure and further develop their company's growth and business competitiveness. IMP�rove provides a new online platform to verify the innovation level of SMEs through a web-based questionnaire, benchmarking SME innovation in relation to the top performers in the business sector concerned.
The European Commission will be supporting the project up until December 2009 with a total subsidy of € 5 million.

INSME's Picks in the News
   European SME week 2009

The European SME week is being organised by the European Commission for the first time from 6 to 14 May 2009.
This initiative offers a range of services related to EU and national support policies for SMEs and entrepreneurship with a view to encourage more people to become entrepreneurs.

The SME week will be launched in Brussels on 6 May 2009 and the vast majority of its events will take place across Europe in the Member States.
Proposals to participate have to be sent to the national Countries coordinators for their validation and approval.

   IIC-IADB
The IIC-IADB (Inter-American Investment Corporation member of Inter- American Development Bank) is an International Organisation aimed at promoting the economic development of its regional developing member countries by encouraging the establishment, expansion, and modernization of private enterprises, preferably those that are small and medium-scale, in such a way as to supplement the activities of the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB).

   IJTG: Special issue on Emerging Markets - Call for Papers
The International Journal of Technology and Globalisation (IJTG) has recently launched a Call for papers for a Special Issue on Emerging Markets. The goal of the call is to foster and promote innovative thinking in the sciences, management, and policy fields and to exchange ideas and views on the global implications of technology for economic growth, sustainable development and international security. In particular, it aims to promote communication among policy makers, experts and professionals in government, industry, academia and civil society.

The deadline for submission of papers is July 30, 2009.

   IASP: World Conference 2009 - Call for Papers
Issuer: The International Association of Science Parks (IASP)
Title: Future Knowledge Ecosystems: The Opportunity for Science & Technology Parks, Places & Partners (North Carolina - USA, 1-4 June, 2009)
Aim: Providing a showcase for technological know-how, innovations and opportunities to share business experiences and success stories in technology-led economic development.
Call for papers: The conference organizers welcome proposals for papers to be presented at the Conference sessions. Papers should showcase strategies and innovative solutions to prepare for the future and help to build the model for future knowledge ecosystems.

The deadline for submission of papers' abstracts: 20th November 2008.

   EU: Innovation Express INNET Trans-European Innovation Express - Call for Proposals
Innovation Express is the first trans-European call for proposals for Technology Clusters and SMEs financed by the national/regional innovation agencies and authorities within the INNET project, supported by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry. The call aims to foster trans-national cooperation between European Technology Clusters, for the benefit of their SMEs, in accordance with the specific regional/national funding programmes of the INNET partners and with their organisations' rules.

Countries participating in the project are: Belgium (Flanders), France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Poland, Spain and UK. Applicants are invited to contact their regional/national contact points for eligibility check and assistance.

Officially launched on Friday 28th March 2008, the Innovation Express call will remain open until 31 december 2008.

   European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT)
The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), based in Budapest - Hungary, has launched its activities on 15 September. EIT is the new EU initiative to foster the EU's capacity to transform education and research results into tangible commercial innovation opportunities, bridging the innovation gap between the EU and its major international competitors.

   World Bank: Doing Business 2009
Doing Business 2009 is the sixth in a series of annual reports of the World Bank investigating the regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it. In particular, it identifies indicators on business regulations in force in 181 countries, analysing 13 regions. This year's edition summarises results achieved in a comparison with the last five years' reports.

   EU: Textiles studies and reports on Mediterranean partner countries
An on-line collection of documents, studies and reports, conceived by the European Commission - DG Enterprise and Industry, to provide useful information about EU funding opportunities and important information sources dedicated to the textiles and clothing sector in the Mediterranean region.

   EU: Practical Guide to EU Funding Opportunities for Research and Innovation
Published by the European Commission, this Practical Guide is aimed to help potential beneficiaries of EU programmes finding the most appropriate funding scheme through the three main funding instruments (2007-2013): Structural Funds and Cohesion Fund, the Research Framework Programme -7FP and the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme - CIP.
The guide also offers to policy makers a concise description of each fund and how they can access European funding at every stage of a project.

   European Cluster Observatory
The Center for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Stockholm School of Economics has launched, under the Europe INNOVA programme, a new platform called European Cluster Observatory. The platform provides information on clusters and an accurate analysis on their organisations, policies and programmes related to innovation. It covers the 27 EU Countries as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Turkey and Israel.
