"INSMEnews" is the free monthly newsletter edited since 2004 by the INSME Association Secretariat to stay updated about the activities of the International Network for SMEs, its Members and Partners worldwide. INSME aims to promote transnational cooperation among private and public stakeholders to make innovation happen in SMEs.

"INSMEnews" is available in English, Spanish and Russian. Sponsors and Promoters to translate this newsletter into other languages are welcome among INSME Members, international Partners and Third Parties.

We welcome contributions, comments and suggestions that can enrich this newsletter and improve our ongoing work, with the aim to support innovation intermediaries, their networking and internationalisation so as to better reach SMEs.

8th INSME Annual Meeting updates

Innovation stakeholders worldwide can already mark in their 2012 calendar the 8th INSME Annual Meeting on "Innovation across Borders: Building Competitive Nations through SMEs Networks".

This event is co-hosted by INSME and the World Technopolis Association - WTA (INSME Member), Daejeon Metropolitan City, Innobiz Association and Daejeon Convention Center, and will be held in Daejeon, Republic of Korea on May 21st -24th 2012.

The INSME Secretariat invites you to visit in the upcoming weeks the new official 8th INSME Annual Meeting website at: www.annualmeeting2012.insme.org (currently under construction)

INSME Bilateral Meetings in Rome

Ms. Simona Marzetti, INSME Secretary General, met last October in Rome a high level delegation from Colombia (Chamber of Commerce of Manizales, Chamber of Commerce of Pereira), in order to identify synergies and opportunities for mutual benefits with regard to potential joint initiatives in the field of SME innovation and SME competitiveness, also with a view to explore the possibility of organizing in the future a joint international SME Congress in Colombia.

The delegation was accompanied by Abcnet (INSME Observer) and was in Itay on the occasion of the Rome Forum on the initiatives and opportunities of cooperation between Italy and Colombia.

- In late October, the INSME Secretary general met also in Rome Mr. Toshiyasu ICHIOKA, PhD Project manager J-BILAT of the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation in order to learn more about opportunities of science and technology cooperation between Japan and EU members.

INNOVA: Shanghai Technology Innovation Center - STIC delegation meeting in Rome

A high level Chinese delegation led by the Shanghai Technology Innovation Center (STIC) organized a study tour in Rome on November 17 in order to have a better understanding of how to help companies have access to finance, intelligence and opportunities in Italy and seek incubator- based potential cooperative opportunities.

On this purpose, the delegation visited the premises of the INSME Member Innova which provided useful information about the Italian national innovation system. The Shanghai Science & Technology Development and Exchange Centre was also involved in the visit. STIC is a public agency under the Science & Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipal Government, which has already taken last year 10 majormeasures to support SME's growth and innovation in the global economic slowdown.

INSME's Picks in the News

EU: R&D Scoreboard: top EU firms increase investment in innovation, but lag behind global competitors

On 18th October 2011 the European Commission published the 2011 "EU Industrial R&D Investment Scoreboard"within the context of the Industrial Research Monitoring and Analysis (IRMA) activities that are jointly carried out by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) - Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) and the EC - Directorate General for Research and Innovation. The data collected show that R&D investment by top EU companies recovered strongly in 2010, with a 6.1% rise following a 2.6% decrease in 2009. However, data for the world's top 1,400 companies show EU companies as a whole lagging behind major competitors from the US and some Asian economies on R&D growth.

2011 Saudi Conference for SMEs and Entrepreneurs

INSME is pleased to announce to be partner of the upcoming Saudi Conference for SMEs and Entrepreneurs "Entrepreneurs and SMEs: a New Era for the K ingdom's Growth", organised by NASEBA, to be held on the 4th -5th December 2011 in Ryiadh, Saudi Arabia.

The event, official endorsed and to be opened by His Royal Highness, Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Ryiadh, will aim to enable Saudi Arabian Government officials and key decision makers from the private sector to meet Saudi SMEs, entrepreneurs and innovators, with a view to encourage entrepreneurialism and help create jobs in the private sector.

2012 Izdehar SME Conference in Saudi Arabia

INSME is also involved as partner of the Izdehar SME Conference 2012, the premier exhibition and conference supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Saudi Arabia, organised by informa Saudi Arabia and National Exhibitions Co.

The event, including a SME and Entrepreneurship Summit, will be held from the 13th to the 15th May 2012 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

IPR Protection in China for the Textile Industry - part I

Taking into account the role of Chinese's textile industry in terms of opportunities and threats, China IPR SME Helpdesk issues an article on Intellectual Property issues across subsectors of the textile industry, with a view to provide useful information to protect foreign technologies and brands by infringement of Chinese competitors. In particular, this first part of the article focuses on trade marks and patents.

EU: Economist Visitors Programme to support the work of the Competitiveness Report (2011-2014)

Organiser: European Commission

Eligibility criteria: A doctorate in quantitative economics (economic theory or statistics); at least two years postdoctoral research experience and author of articles relevant to DG Enterprise published on significant international scientific journals with peer review. No nationality requirements.

Aim: Strengthen in-house research potential by improving connections with the economic research community

Topics: Microeconomics and quantitative methods in the areas of industrial policy and economic reforms

Deadline: 30th June 2012

J-Bilat project

J-Bilat project, contributed by the European Commission, aims to facilitate EU-Japan cooperation in research and innovation with a view to reinforce collaboration and S&T partnerships. OECD: Science, Technology and Industry (STI) Scoreboard 2011

The tenth edition of the OECD Science, Technology and Industry (STI) Scoreboard 2011 "Innovation and Growth in Knowledge Economies" has recently been published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development - OECD.

With over 180 comparable indicators, it analyses trends in science, technology, innovation and industrial performance in OECD and major non-OECD countries (Brazil, Russian Federation, India, Indonesia, People's Republic of China and South Africa). It also shows that the United States is still leading the way for research.

OECD: Sustainable Manufacturing Toolkit

The Sustainable Manufacturing Toolkit, issued by the OECD - Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, aims to provide a practical starting point for businesses around the world to improve the efficiency of their production processes and products in a way to contribute to sustainable development and green growth.

The Toolkit comprises the Start-up Guide, which provides easy-to-read guidance to help the reader understand the basic issues and start measurement step by step; the Web Portal which provides detailed explanation on indicators, technical advice on performance management and links to more guidance.

World Bank Group: Doing Business 2012 "Doing Business in a More Transparent World"

Doing Business 2012, a co-publication of the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation, is the ninth in a series of annual reports investigating the regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it.

The Report presents quantitative indicators on business regulation and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 183 economies and it ranks the economies in 10 areas of business regulation, such as starting a business, resolving insolvency and trading across borders.
