National Intellectual Property Systems, Innovation and Economic Development with perspectives on Colombia and Indonesia

In the publication on “National Intellectual Property Systems, Innovation and Economic Development with perspectives on Colombia and Indonesia“, OECD experts analyze the role of national IP systems in the socio-economic development of emerging countries, by considering them as a policy area of potentially significant impact on innovation. The publication states that in a development context potential innovators face multiple challenges that shape the impacts IP systems can have on innovation.

These include substantial heterogeneities in productive sectors. In other words a few “islands of excellence”, such as leading innovative firms, universities and/or sectors, co-exist with an often-substantial informal sector and a large number of firms with low innovation capacities. In order to support innovation, it is important that all groups have opportunities to effectively benefit from the national IP system.

The publication includes two case studies on Colombia and Indonesia providing policy recommendations to the National IP Systems of both countries.

Young people take the lead & change their communities with eco-innovation

Captain Planet is a foundation with the objective to support and encourage innovative initiatives that inspire and empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively creating environmental solutions in their homes, schools and communities.

The Foundation is currently supporting Kenyan youth by fundraising an idea which would make life for the community they live in better and healthier.

In particular a group of Kenyan girls identified two problems in their community. The first problem is that existing stoves use coal and wood which are expensive and not a sustainable fuel. The second is that people have no use for rice husks, so they pile up on the sides of roads and in towns creating a very unsightly nuisance. The solution they came up with consists of a cook stove that can use rice husks efficiently for cooking and heating. Not only this deals with the issue of deforestation which is impacting Africa, it also provides a much cleaner and safer fuel for burning, producing less carbon and pollution while eliminating a waste product.

Development that Works: is innovation a threat to employment in Latin America?

The article analyses how and if innovation is a threat to employment in Latin America.

In particular on the one hand economists state that technological change could create unemployment through the substitution of capital for labor, on the other hand innovation may result in higher productivity, lower prices and higher demand which will eventually create new jobs.

Therefore the final effects of innovation on employment depend on the balance between substitution and compensation effects.

About IPR…in China

Copyright Protection in China: Part I

The article offers an overview on what copyright is by outlining what can be protected as copyright and why taking care to do so can prove beneficial to the business in China.

Copyright may be considered both as an important part of IP protection strategy and as a supplementary tool to enforce alongside other IP rights, such as design patents or trademarks. Voluntary registration is available and highly recommended in China as it will provide proof of ownership, which can save SME time and money in case of a dispute later on.

The Innovation Union Scoreboard 2014

The European Commission recently released the Innovation Union Scoreboard 2014 which provides a comparative assessment of the research and innovation performance of the EU Member States and the relative strengths and weaknesses of their research and innovation systems.

According to the scoreboard the EU and all EU Member States have become more innovative in recent years. As a result, the EU has closed half of the innovation gap towards the US. However, the differences in the innovation performance within the EU are still very high and diminish only slowly. The overall ranking within the EU remains relatively stable, with Sweden, followed by Denmark, Germany and Finland recognized as Innovation Leaders. Portugal, Estonia and Latvia are the innovation growth leaders being the countries that have most improved over the last years.

Most progress has been made in the openness and attractiveness of the EU research system as well as business innovation collaboration and the commercialisation of knowledge as measured by license and patent revenues from abroad. However, the growth of public R&D expenditures over the last years was offset by a continuous decline in venture capital investments and non-R&D innovation investments in companies.

Mapping Smart Cities in the EU

The European Parliament recently issued a report on “Mapping Smart Cities in the EU” with the aim of providing background information and advice to their members on Smart Cities in the EU and to explain how existing mechanisms perform, in particular vis-à-vis the targets of EU 2020.

In this report, a Smart City is one with at least one initiative addressing one or more of the following six characteristics: Smart Governance, Smart People, Smart Living, Smart Mobility, Smart Economy and Smart Environment.

According to the report smart environment and smart mobility actions are the most common with 33% and 21% of all smart initiatives  respectively. It has been proved that successful projects are those with inspiring city leaders, clear objectives, goals, targets and baseline measurement systems in place from the outset and those who tend to be embedded in a comprehensive city vision.

A key concern to the Commission is to identify solutions that are scalable. The report found that scalability/dissemination are more likely if both private companies and public authorities are involved in providing an institutional base for scaling. In addition cooperation among cities to create a common Smart City platform for large-scale development and testing would be highly recommended.

The International Entrepreneurs Investment Forum

The International Entrepreneurs Investment Forum on “Entrepreneurs’ Role in a Changing Business Environment”, will take place from the 21st to the 24th of April at Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain.

The event is organized by the General Union of Arab Chambers and UNIDO (INSME Member) through the support of the Islamic Development Bank, the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa and INSME, among others.

Due to current economic conditions, unemployment is one of the challenges that governments have to face. It has been proved that the answer to employment generation lies in the promotion of the private sector - notably the entrepreneur - through the promotion of investments, both foreign and domestic.

Thus, the immediate objective for governments will have to focus on strengthening the existing entrepreneurs and developing the conditions for the creation of new enterprises.

The Forum addresses entrepreneurs from all over the world in order to explore the possibilities of cooperation and joint investment potential. In particular the Forum aims at developing a platform for entrepreneurs to access and promote their investment opportunities, disseminate best practices from the cases of successful programs and tools and facilitate trade among them.
