12 propositions for action to promote innovation in the Mediterranean

ANIMA publication logo

Produced by ANIMA (INSME Member) in collaboration with the MIRA project of the European Commission, this study is an analysis of macro-economic issues relating to the Mediterrean area and aims to identify the key elements required to drive new innovation dynamics - including the promotion of best practises, the need to identify and involve industry leaders as well as to strengthen networking between communities and innovation clusters at regional level.

Based on this assessment the study examines the state of play of the innovation stakeholders and policies in 7 Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

The report highlights some critical factors with a negative impact on innovation growth in the Mediterranean countries - lack of critical mass and global visibility, poor performance in commercialising research results – and promotes 12 proposals for an Euro-Mediterranean action plan that helps the countries in this area to develop an innovation culture.

2013 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index

2013 GMCI logo

The 2013 Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index, prepared by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited’s (DTTL) Global Manufacturing Industry group and the U.S. Council on Competitiveness, once again ranks China as the most competitive manufacturing nation in the world both today and five years from now. Second and third scored Germany and the United States, but according to the report in next years they could be overtaken by emerging nations such as India and Brazil.

The report highlights that access to talented workers is the top indicator of a country’s competitiveness – followed by a country’s trade, financial and tax system, and the cost of labor and materials. Enhancing and growing an effective talent base is the core of competitiveness for the traditional manufacturing leaders and the emerging market challengers.
