ISPIM Bergen 2025 – What Determines an Accelerator’s Success?

18 June 2025

The International Society for Professional Innovation Management (ISPIM), Member of INSME, held its annual Innovation Conference in Bergen, Norway under the topic “Innovation Powered by Nature”. On the 16th of June, Giovanni Zazzerini had the opportunity to speak and represent INSME during this ever-growing innovation-focused summit.

Every year, the ISPIM conference includes different types of business innovation across fields such as technology or environmental conservation and features speakers and presenters from around the world. There were over 500 innovative professionals from over 50 countries with many presentations and workshops to exchange information, knowledge, and expertise.

Zazzerini presented a joint paper regarding business accelerators, Innovation Ranking and Sectorial Focus as Determinants of Accelerators Success, written in the scope of the AccelerAction EU project that ended earlier this year. In addition to Zazzerini, the paper featured co-authors Vasiliki Brimpou, Achilleas Barlas, Victoria Bellou, and Yeoryios Stamboulis, all from the University of Thessaly in Greece. The paper concludes that accelerators that invest in agile and collaborative models have the potential to make a decisive contribution to shaping a dynamic innovation environment in Europe. Based on the study’s data, the diversity of technology sectors supported by accelerators demonstrates the importance of focused strategies to promote innovation. At the same time, strengthening cooperation networks can enhance knowledge transfer and the creation of ecosystems conducive to business development. Adopting specialised approaches, such as supporting cutting-edge sectors such as artificial intelligence, enhances the resilience and sustainability of start-ups.
