Colombia joins the OECD and becomes its 37th member country

May, 29, 2020

On the 28th of April 2020, Colombia officially became the 37th member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the third country from the Latin America and Caribbean region to join this prestigious organisation after Mexico and Chile.

The accession process started in 2013 and during the following 5 years drove the country to the introduction of major reforms in order to align its legislation, policies, and practices to the OECD standards. This path ended up in 2018 with the formal invitation by the OECD Member countries to join the organisation.

In general, this path of reforms introduced improvements in the labour market, in the education and in the health system that raised the welfare of its citizens.

Angel Gurría, OECD Secretary-General declared “We are delighted to welcome Colombia as the 37th member of the OECD. Colombia’s accession is tangible proof of our commitment to bring together countries who strive for the highest standards in global public policy in order to improve the well-being and quality of life of their citizens. Given its recent history, Colombia can be rightly proud of what is a truly exceptional achievement.”
