Exploring the EU Digital Markets Act: INSME Secretary General attending the I-Com VideoTalk

28 September 2021

INSME Secretary General Giovanni Zazzerini has attended the VideoTalk “Setting right expectations and legal certainty. The role of regulatory dialogue for a successful DMA” organised on September 23rd by I-Com, the Institute for Competitiveness. The event offered a forum to discuss the key issue of new obligations provided by the Digital Markets Act (DMA), one of the most important milestones for the EU digital strategy, submitted by the European Commission in December 2020.

The draft EU regulation addresses platform services, the so-called “gatekeepers” (such as, but not only the “Big Tech”) that have a strong economic, intermediation and durable position in the market, setting for them several obligations and prohibitions.

In case of non-compliance with their obligations, gatekeepers may incur in fines of up to 10% of the worldwide turnover. The main goal of this Act is regulating the new critical issues connected to the affirmation of large online intermediaries and platforms, putting in place a new, dynamic regulatory environment able to ensure a fair and transparent competition within the digital sector, avoiding a “winner takes all” market configuration.
