European Innovation Council (EIC) Summit: New Funding Opportunities for Innovators

5 December 2022

The EIC Summit took place on 7-8 December 2022 in Brussels where European innovation policy developments and challenges have been discussed with key European deep-tech innovative start-ups, researchers, investors, policymakers and corporates.

Mariya Gabriel, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, presented the 2023 budget and work plan, opening funding opportunities worth over €1.6 billion in 2023 for for scientists and innovators to scale up breakthrough technologies and create new markets. Over half a billion euro is earmarked for next generation technologies in strategic areas for Europe, including energy storage, quantum, semi-conductors, and food security.

The new funding for 2023 reinforces the EIC’s increasing track record in supporting high-impact technologies and start-ups. The EIC Impact Report highlights that the EIC has already supported 12 “unicorn” companies, incentivised over €10 billion in follow-on investments and leveraged a multiple of over 2.6 times additional investments via the EIC Fund. This year’s work programme includes several novelties and pilot actions to support the New European Innovation Agenda.

The EIC Summit also hosted workshops and three EIC Awards Ceremonies during the two days of the event: the European Capital of Innovation Awards (iCapital), the EU Prize for Women Innovators 2022, and the European Innovation Procurement Awards (EUIPA).
