On March 5, the final event of SUPERSHINE, one of INSME’s EU projects, was held in Riga, Latvia, providing an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate the project’s achievements over the past years.
The project successfully implemented and validated its approach in three lighthouse districts in Trieste (Italy), Herning (Denmark), and Riga (Latvia), showcasing integrated solutions including energy-efficient buildings, low-carbon mobility, smart energy systems, and improved water and waste management. It also supported the transfer and adaptation of its methodologies in fellow cities – Setúbal (Portugal), Belgrade (Serbia), Zaragoza (Spain), and Istanbul (Turkiye) – strengthening local capacities and fostering replication across diverse urban and socio-economic contexts. This way, SUPERSHINE not only led to resource optimisation through digital and responsive technologies, but, most of all, enhanced residents’ wellbeing and quality of life.
Through its results, SUPERSHINE has contributed to the implementation of key EU policy frameworks, including the Green Deal, the Renovation Wave Strategy, and the New European Bauhaus, by providing concrete tools, models, and evidence to support sustainable, inclusive, and high-quality urban regeneration. The project capitalised on and further advanced the work developed under SUPER-i, particularly in relation to innovative financial schemes, ensuring that financing solutions for energy-efficient social housing renovation are operational, scalable, and replicable beyond the project’s lifetime.
Within the project, INSME supported the analysis and implementation of business models and financial instruments for energy efficiency renovations in social housing, building on methodologies from the SUPER-i and XPRESS projects. In particular, INSME highlighted the strategic role of Public Procurement of Innovation (PPI) in sustainable urban transformation and, drawing on XPRESS experience, promoted Green Public Procurement by fostering dialogue between public and private stakeholders to support investments in innovative and sustainable solutions.
