SECO – Switzerland and the African Development Bank deepen partnership

On 16 September 2026, Switzerland and the African Development Bank strengthened their cooperation during the first high-level visit by an AfDB president to Bern. Swiss President Guy Parmelin welcomed AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah for meetings with representatives from government, business and the financial sector. The visit focused on finding new ways to mobilise investment, create jobs and support sustainable and inclusive economic growth across Africa.

During the first Switzerland–AfDB Business Roundtable, Swiss companies explored investment and cooperation opportunities in Africa’s growing markets. Further discussions with financial-sector representatives focused on sustainable finance, attracting more private capital and building stronger links between development banks and institutional investors. As Africa’s leading multilateral development finance institution, the AfDB can help connect private investment with projects that support regional development, climate action and economic stability while creating opportunities for both African economies and Swiss businesses.

Vocational education and training was another important part of the visit. At Swisscom, President Tah learned about Switzerland’s dual education model, which brings together companies, schools and public institutions to help young people develop skills that match the needs of employers. By sharing this experience, Switzerland and the AfDB aim to support job creation and improve opportunities for Africa’s growing young population while building stronger cooperation between African and Swiss institutions and companies.
