BVMW’s Study on Digital Skills for SMEs

22 November 2023

The Mittelstand-Digital Zentrum Berlin offers an extensive analysis of digital competencies in small and medium-sized enterprises through its recent research, “Transformation and Future Competences in SMEs”,  (please note the study is available in German only). According to the findings, only 25% of smaller companies acknowledge the significance of digital thinking as a crucial skill among their employees. This underscores the growing importance of digital skills in today’s technology-driven business environment.

The results make it clear that companies are positioned differently depending on their adaptive competencies, which underlines the need not only to react to current challenges, but also to act proactively and forward-looking. The study suggests that action is needed, particularly when it comes to the human component of digital transformation. It is important to invest in employee training rather than focusing solely on technology: a culture of adaptability and lifelong learning is essential for this. The study also emphasises the importance of lifelong learning and flexible continuing education that can be seamlessly integrated into everyday working life. It offers practical recommendations and strategies on how SMEs can meet the challenges of digital transformation and exploit their full potential.
