Held on October 14-15, co-organised with Confapi and supported by Unioncamere in Rome, the 20th INSME Annual Meeting brought together international experts, policymakers, and business leaders to discuss “Unlocking Sustainable Finance for SMEs”. Celebrating two decades of championing SMEs globally, the event underscored the urgent need for SMEs to adopt Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards as a path toward innovation, resilience, and competitiveness. Keynote speakers opened the meeting with discussions on sustainable finance’s potential to transform the SME landscape, highlighting practical tools to facilitate ESG compliance and attract investors.
The first panel, titled “Sustainable Finance: Is It an Oxymoron?”, examined the role of financial institutions and economic stakeholders in supporting sustainable practices among SMEs. International leaders outlined strategies for banks, investors, and other players to create financial pathways for SMEs in the ESG space. Following this, “Integrating ESG and Innovation” highlighted how integrating ESG principles can drive both environmental responsibility and business innovation, providing new market opportunities, lowering operational costs, and enhancing resource efficiency for SMEs.
Afternoon sessions included “Supporting Policies and ESG Regulation”, where global experts addressed the complex regulatory landscape that often presents barriers to SMEs. Discussions focused on the policies that facilitate ESG compliance and those that need reform to support sustainable finance more effectively. The final session on “The Twin Transition” explored the intersection of digital and green transformations. Panellists discussed how integrating digital skills with sustainable practices can enhance SME competitiveness despite financial technological challenges.
Lastly, INSME closed the works with a dynamic brokerage event which fostered collaboration among members, with experts from across regions exchanging insights on future projects and partnerships. INSME reaffirmed its commitment to building resilient SME ecosystems, driving sustainable growth, and facilitating global partnerships to support small businesses through the green and digital transition.
