INSME at the OECD SME & Entrepreneurship Ministerial

26 April 2023

Ministers and high-level participants from 50+ different countries (OECD members and non-members) will meet on 27-28 June 2023 at the OECD Headquarters in Paris to discuss and exchange ideas on “Managing shocks and transitions – Future proofing SME and Entrepreneurship Policies”. INSME will participate during this event as a stakeholder.

The COVID-19 pandemic, economic shocks, and the ongoing need to implement efficient green and digital transition have perpetually threatened the stability of SMEs around the world. Since the last OECD conference in 2018, it has been acknowledged that there is a need to address challenges in the SME policy as a top priority, seeing as SMEs and entrepreneurs have been disproportionately affected by recent economic setbacks. Addressing these challenges is crucial, including the rising costs and weakening demand, set against a tightening monetary policy. At the same time, there is an important effort being made to fully harness the potential of SMEs and entrepreneurship to contribute to major economic, environmental, social and societal transitions. All these issues, if solved, will boost the resilience of SMEs to address future shocks and challenges.

Participants will discuss these themes while focusing on strengthening SMEs and entrepreneurs’ resilience to future crises and shocks, fostering the contribution of SMEs and entrepreneurs to the green and digital transitions, and finally enabling SMEs and entrepreneurs to navigate the changing global trade and investment landscape.

Markus Jerger, INSME’s vice-President and CEO of BVMW, the German Mittelstand, has been invited to speak at the Stakeholders Round Table that will state the position of the private sector to the Ministers for more effective SME policies. How Ministerial recommendations can be best implemented  will be discussed at the 2023 INSME Annual Meeting that will take place on 9-10 October at the Centre for the Digitalization of SMEs in Berlin.
