17 November 2024

On November 8, the online event “Space, Defence and Security: Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Startups Ecosystem” brought together experts in aerospace, defence, and entrepreneurship to tackle the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving global landscape. Organized under the Forward Advance Initiative, the event featured a distinguished lineup of speakers’, including Sergio Arzeni, President of INSME, who delivered an inspiring vision of how startups and SMEs can redefine the future of these critical sectors.

Arzeni’s intervention stood out for its focus on the transformative role of SMEs in driving innovation at the crossroads of technology and security. He argued that startups, with their agility and ability to challenge traditional norms, are essential players in tackling complex issues such as cybersecurity, satellite communication, and defence modernization. By connecting through international networks like INSME, these businesses gain access to funding opportunities, knowledge sharing, and collaborations that can amplify their impact. For Mr. Arzeni, empowering these innovators is not just an economic strategy, but it is necessary for staying ahead in an era defined by rapid technological and geopolitical change.

The event, moderated by Ms. Eleonora Lombardi, Head of Department at FEA, also featured prominent voices like Lorenzo Scatena, Secretary General at FEA, Francesco Rossi, Senior Investment Manager at CDP Venture Capital, Giorgio Marsiaj, Delegate of the President of Confindustria for Aerospace and Domenico Moro, Coordinator of the security and defence research area of the CSF. Together they painted a compelling picture of an ecosystem where public institutions and private entrepreneurship converge to create solutions that are both scalable and secure. INSME President echoed these themes, emphasizing the need for greater investment in research and development while calling for bold partnerships that span borders and industries.

In closing, Arzeni’s message resonated deeply: the future of security and defence hinges on innovation, and startups are the catalysts that can turn challenges into opportunities. His vision reaffirmed the importance of building ecosystems that break down silos, foster creativity, and embrace entrepreneurship as the driving force behind technological progress.
