UNIDO First International Conference on Clean Hydrogen in Industry

On April 8th the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), with support from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF), hosted its first international conference on Clean Hydrogen in Industry in Vienna. The event brought together over  350 leaders from governments, international organizations, and civil society from across 70 countries to advance clean hydrogen deployment and industrial decarbonisation. The conference emphasised that hydrogen is no longer just an energy transition tool; it is the engine for a “Green Industrial Revolution” that will redefine global supply chains.

This conference marked a shift from dialogue to implementation, starting with the signed partnership agreements between UNIDO and Dii Desert Energy and Women in Green Hydrogen. Through this partnership, practical pathways to scale investment, build markets, and strengthen international coordination will be elaborated. To guide implementation, practical de-risking mechanisms were advised by participants to allow access to capital at scale. The implementation of robust standards and strong institutional frameworks was advised to move projects away from concepts towards bankability.

Additionally, this conference underscored the critical role of international public funding to support hydrogen deployment in emerging markets and developing economies. One of the most significant announcements from the conference was the GEF-funded Global Clean Hydrogen Program, with $15 million in GEF funding and a further $168 million in co-financing. The program is expected to deliver 15 million tons of CO₂ reductions across eight pilot countries: Algeria, Egypt, Malaysia, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, and South Africa.

Between the expertise from ambassadors, industry pioneers and technology providers the message was clear: hydrogen’s moment has arrived. Driven by the fragility of global energy markets and recent geopolitical shifts, the transition from future ambition to present-day implementation is moving at an unprecedented pace. This conference marks a turning point in the global effort to decouple industry from fossil fuel dependency and build a resilient, low-carbon future.
