WIPO Global Innovation Index 2024

23 September 2024

The World Intellectual Property Organization – WIPO has released the 2024 Global Innovation Index – GII, ranking the world’s top 100 science and technology -S&T clusters based on their innovation capabilities.

A widespread commonality among thriving nations is the presence of prosperous S&T clusters. These clusters are home to acclaimed universities, brilliant researchers, R&D-intensive companies, and prolific inventors. The United States and China dominate the list with some of the largest S&T growth clusters. For instance, the San Francisco-San Jose Bay Area includes Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Santa Clara University, and tech giants like Google, Apple, NVIDIA, and Samsung. The influx of students, investors, and businesses fuels a network of innovation, contributing to the Global Innovation Index of these economies.

While high-income economies saw slower growth overall, with seven out of 63 high-income clusters experiencing negative S&T output in 2023, middle-income economies made significant strides. Clusters in cities such as Cairo (Egypt), Chennai (India), and Istanbul (Türkiye) showed considerable growth, signalling a shift in global innovation dynamics.

Developing nations can enhance their GII standing by investing in educational hubs that attract young talent and foster business growth. The full GII report not only ranks the top 100 clusters but also identifies the leading applicants and organizations driving innovation in each region.
