In 2022, despite a decrease in global trademark and design filings, a notable surge was seen in innovation with a record 3.46 million patent applications submitted worldwide, marking the third consecutive year of growth as outlined in WIPO’s annual World Intellectual Property Indicators report. China, the US, Japan, Republic of Korea, and Germany emerged as the leading countries in patent filings, with China contributing almost half of the global applications, although its growth rate slightly slowed. Conversely, India witnessed a remarkable 31.6% increase in patent applications, maintaining an unparalleled 11-year growth streak among the top 10 filers. WIPO Director General Daren Tang cautioned about potential disruptions in the global intellectual property landscape due to geopolitical instability and economic uncertainty. Remarkably, despite declines in trademark and industrial design filings, Asia remains the epicentre for intellectual property filings, contributing significantly to global patent, trademark, and industrial design activities, accounting for around two-thirds of filings across these categories in 2022.
